For Adults
Learning to DJ
Have you always wanted to try DJing? Or are looking for something completely different and new to try? Novice to Nightclub makes learning to DJ accessible.
Starting from the very basics, you will learn how DJs prepare tracks, beatmatch, create smooth transitions and use the controls creatively to shape the energy of a mix. Everything is taught step by step, with plenty of time actually on the decks, and no previous musical or technical experience is needed.
All equipment is provided and classes sizes are kept at 10 or fewer so that each participate has access to their own DJ controller, iPad, and headphones.
Choose a short introduction course, immerse yourself in a full day of DJing, or maximise the experience by going from being a novice to DJing in a London nightclub.
What We Offer
Two-Hour DJ Workshop
Perfect for complete beginners, this standalone workshop gives you a hands-on introduction to the essential skills of DJing.
You will learn how to cue tracks accurately, beatmatch songs and understand how DJs use musical phrasing to decide when to mix. From there, you will start creating your own transitions using the channel faders, EQ and filters.
The focus is practical from the very beginning: you will be working with real tracks and making your first mixes.
By the end of the session, you will understand what is happening behind the decks and have the skills to mix between tracks yourself.
This is an ideal first experience for anyone who has wanted to know what DJing is really like, and a great way to discover whether you want to take it further.
Full-Day DJ Experience
Spend a day progressing from complete beginner to confident DJ.
Building on the fundamental skills of beatmatching, cueing and mixing, you will explore musical phrasing, EQ and filter transitions, hot cues, looping and effects. You will also learn how DJs manipulate loops to build energy, move around different sections of a track and begin shaping several songs into a coherent set.
Along the way, you will develop a better understanding of track structure and learn to listen to music from a DJ’s perspective: identifying the moments where a transition can begin, where energy changes and how one track can complement another.
The day is practical, with structured challenges. By the end, you will have moved well beyond simply pressing play and will be able to put together and perform your own short DJ set, with a chance to do so in front of the group.
Novice to Nightclub
Start as a complete beginner and finish behind the decks of a London nightclub.
The full Novice to Nightclub experience combines DJ tuition with a live performance. You will learn the core skills of beatmatching, phrasing, EQ, filters, hot cues, looping, effects and set-building before preparing four tracks for your own section of an extended back-to-back DJ set.
Following the course, you and your fellow DJs will take over the booth at a London nightclub and perform your set live, with family and friends invited to come and watch.
This course is a journey from preparing your music, rehearsing your transitions, and developing the confidence, to performing live alongside synchronised lights, smoke machines, friends and family in the crowd as you play it live.
“I have always wanted to learn to DJ but been too scared to start. Novice to Nightclub felt like being taught how and why, rather than just being given an instruction and left to FIGURE it out. I can’t wait to showing off my new skills at my brother’s birthday party next month.”
– Alice B., Former Novice DJ
